I have been sharing in our family group about the culture of the New Testament Church. Culture is essentially the way of life or lifestyle of a particular group of people. From Genesis to Revelation there is clearly depicted a “Biblical culture” that was established not by man, but by the Lord Himself. You also discover from the Bible that the “culture” that God established for His people has a lot to do with the heart. In fact, the Bible has a lot to say about the “heart.” The word “heart” appears in over 700 verses in the Bible. The vast majority of uses in scripture are not referring to the physical “muscle” that pumps blood through our bodies, but rather the center of the spiritual and emotional character of a human being.
Even from the beginning as God began to establish a relationship with His people, and a culture that He desired for His people, you will notice that every reference of how God’s people were to love him and serve Him always refers to love not just from the heart, but with all the heart. Deut.6:5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
The problem becomes clear in scripture that men could not and would not love the Lord with all their hearts because of sin and corruption in their hearts. As believers and New Testament Christians we understand that the heart is the root of mankind’s problem and separation from God. There is a heart issue that exists within all of us that must be dealt with. Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Mat 15:18, 19 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.
The heart must be changed if God’s people are to love Him with all their hearts. This is why our Lord Jesus came and died for us so that through His atonement, our hearts could be healed and restored to God’s design and purpose. The culture of the New Testament is about the heart. A changed heart will be a good heart like the good soil that receives the word and bears fruit…..Luke 8:15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. A changed heart will be a sincere heart that gladly does the will of God and serves both God and man from the heart…..Eph 6:5-7 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, The culture of God’s people is about the heart, in fact it has always been about the heart. To Him be Glory. Amen.
